ESS EXPO.08 to Provide Latest Trends, Innovative Solutions for EHS Software Users

If you haven’t already registered, here’s a personal invitation from me to join us at ESS EXPO.08 from Sunday, April 13 - Tuesday, April 15, at Sheraton Wild Horse Pass Resort outside Phoenix, Arizona.

ESS EXPO.08 is the largest software users’ conference of the year dedicated to Environmental, Health & Safety and Crisis Management. Attendees will see the latest technology innovations from ESS – with up-close looks at new versions of our software (Essential Suite™ version 7.1 and the browser-based version of Compliance Suite™) as well as quick tips and in-depth explanations from the experts who design, develop and support those tools. In addition, our training team will offer training courses that address key regulatory compliance issues and best practices.

Participants will hear the latest news about a variety of Governance, Risk and Compliance issues and information management challenges. Sessions like “Corporate Sustainability: Helping People and Businesses Reach Their Potential” by Microsoft and “REACH – Understanding and Implementing for Compliance” by PTK, Ltd — the firm that co-authored the regulation — provide a brief sample of the topics that will be discussed at this year’s ESS EXPO.

At ESS EXPO, you can meet your peers, exchange best practices and meet keynote speakers Simon Jacobson of AMR Research and racing icon Kyle Petty. Jacobson will provide an overview of enterprise trends, while Petty, of course, plans to talk about NASCAR and business success.

Our business partners will show how they can enable ESS users to achieve even greater success with complementary solutions and services. And finally, ESS software users will benefit from sharing their own ideas and experiences while networking with other top professionals from a wide variety of vertical industries.

ESS EXPO.08 continues the tremendous success of previous EXPO events, which have attracted hundreds of EHS and Crisis Management professionals.

Intel Makes a Major Investment in Renewable Energy

About 5 percent of global corporations consider climate change a major priority. One of the notable companies moving in that direction is Intel (Nasdaq:INTC), which is now the largest corporate purchaser of renewable energy in the U.S.

Intel has agreed to buy renewable energy certificates (REC) for more than 1.3 billion kilowatt hours per year, which is equivalent to 46 percent of its total U.S. energy use.

Though company officials did not list the length of its agreement, it is likely a significant commitment. Intel’s investment is expected to drive construction of new renewable energy generation facilities, spur similar investments by other companies and eventually drive sufficient demand to lower costs. It also ensures that Intel will be using energy from renewable sources such as wind, the sun and biomass.

Intel has been buying wind power in Oregon for its plant there for years, and this year will purchase 25 million kilowatt hours of wind power.

Intel has always been a leader in environmental monitoring and management at its semiconductor manufacturing facilities and has received numerous awards from environmental groups.

Second among firms buying renewable energy credits is a company that might surprise you: PepsiCo is buying 1.1 billion kilowatt hours of REC per year.

ESS Joins Emerging Tech Companies at Going Green Conference

I’ve spent the beginning of this week at the AlwaysOn Going Green conference. It’s been like a time warp, because just last week I was in Jakarta. I travel so much lately to visit our global partners and customers that I think I am seeing more than the average person about how the world is responding to environmental pressures.

I participated on the panel on energy efficiency. Because this was primarily a technology conference, the energy efficiency panel dealt with the way energy is used in data centers. Most of the panelists focused on methods of increasing domestic energy efficiency. However, that doesn’t necessarily address global issues because a significant portion of industrial production has moved offshore, while the US has shifted to become a service economy.

In order to make a significant dent in the planet’s environmental footprint, and mitigate the effects of climate change and global warming, there needs to be a greater focus on helping organizations in emerging economies manage emissions—especially GHGs. That’s why ESS is building relationships in the Asia Pacific region, where there is significant growth in manufacturing. We’re working with organization heads throughout the region to show them how they can both reduce emissions and improve their business performance.

Among other things, I told the audience that 56 percent of all the energy used in any commercial building is in the HVAC system, and that saving 10 percent in this arena alone is enough to equal taking 30 million cars off the road. Watch the entire panel session.

AlwaysOn showcased 100 new, private greentech companies that are transforming the global energy, water, agriculture, transportation, construction, manufacturing and resource recovery establishments.

The GoingGreen 100 winners were honored at GoingGreen, a summit held at the University of California, Davis Graduate School of Management. Check out the archives from the event. I was asked to be a participant as a panelist, since our company is the market leader in the EH&S software space.
